What is a metal-forming lubricant?
A substance that is capable of reducing friction, heat, and wear when introduced as a film between solid surfaces.
Its purpose is to provide a film between a workpiece and a tool allowing the workpiece to be deformed, under pressure, to the desired shape with a minimum of friction and wear.
Why are metal forming lubricants used?
To lubricate, to cool, to improve tool life, to offer rust protection, to produce quality part and to reduce the rejecion rate of parts.
Functions of a metal-forming lubricant.
The primary functions of metal forming lubricant are to prevent metal to metal contact thereby preventing galling and reducing tool wear, to carry away metal particles minimizing build up in the dies and to provide a degress of cooling to the tools.
The secondary functions and other desirable properties are to provide corrosion protection to the workpiece and equipment, low foaming in recirculating systems (particularly water dilutables), resistance to microbial attack (water containing products) and cleanability.
Limitations of a metal forming lubricant.
Can not overcome mechanical problems in the equipments, poor dies design, die damage like excessive wear, cracks, can not perform well on low quality stock, perform well if applied incorrectly, perform well if diluted improperly, and perform well if not chosen correctly for the application.
